Drug safetyWhat is Medisure Drug Safety?
A Medisure Drug Safety (pharmacovigilance) programme for the collection, detection, assessment, monitoring and prevention of adverse events from Medisure medicinal products once they are authorised for patients' use.
It encourages reporting of suspected adverse events related to any of our products, including unwanted effects or unknown benefits, and builds trust in the overall safety and efficacy of Medisure products.
Drug safetyWhat is pharmacovigilance?
Pharmacovigilance is the primary method used to identify hazards associated with medicinal products and to minimise the risk of harm to patients.
It covers any noxious and unintended response, including lack of efficacy. Medication errors such as overdose, misuse and abuse, and exposure during pregnancy and breastfeeding, are also collected.
Drug safetyWhat is an adverse event?
Any unwanted medical occurrence in a patient given a pharmaceutical product, which may or may not have been caused by the product. It can be any unfavourable and unintended sign, symptom or disease associated with its use.
Drug safetyWhy should adverse events be reported?
Globally, adverse events are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Reporting helps with:
- Learning more about the safety profile and quality of a drug in the general population
- Ensuring safer use of medicines, as a moral and professional obligation
- Improving prescriber and patient confidence in products
- Providing and updating information for prescribers
Drug safetyWhy report to Medisure?
Every drug is marketed after rigorous clinical research, but safety data is still limited by the number and type of patients studied in trials. Continuous monitoring in large, diverse populations identifies unknown or unexpected effects, and sometimes benefits.
Your report gives us feedback that helps us take appropriate action and provide better instructions on how to use our products.
Drug safetyWhat should I do if I think I had an adverse event?
Contact your healthcare professional, who can advise on any treatment you may need. They can also report the issue to Medisure.
In an emergency, seek medical care immediately.
